Long live Power Hour: Will Oak Grove students behave, or will Power Hour be taken away?

November 9, 2017

This semester, the Oak Grove High School administration implemented an academic block  during the school day called Power Hour. This time is meant to encourage students with failing grades or questions about their classes to receive help. Students are able to go to study halls, lunch, nap time, coloring, movie and video games rooms, the library, or a computer lab.

Many students have used this time to do homework or have a much needed social hour with friends. However, some students have taken advantage of Power Hour and view it as a time for physical altercations (fights) to take place.

Over the past three days, there have been at least four fights at OGHS. The participants are mostly underclassmen, specifically freshman. Additionally, almost every recent fight has occurred during Power Hour.

Because of this, the entire student body got Power Hour taken away for the remainder of the week, and OGHS reverted to its previous 90 minute, four block, and four lunch schedule. Personally, our old schedule is not as effective as Power Hour.

Many students are upset at the possibility of losing Power Hour for good. The students who need tutoring are not taking advantage of the opportunities handed to them. The problem with Power Hour is the fact that the same group of students are ruining it for everyone. There are 1500 students doing what they are supposed to do, but there are 200 students that are ruining Power Hour for everyone.

Power Hour is an excellent tool and idea, and it has been working out more smoothly each day. If the teachers and administration would find a way to corral students who are supposed to go to tutoring, which are also the ones who are fighting, Power Hour would be far more organized, effective, and successful for OGHS.
