The varsity cheer team celebrate their first place win and bid to State.

The Oak Grove cheer team competed in the large varsity division and placed first with zero deductions (a perfect score) at the UCA Dixie regional competition in Jackson.

Oak Grove breezed by their biggest competition, Desoto Central, who placed second, by “a large margin” according to veteran cheer coach Ashley Burdine. “We worked so hard and put in many hours of practice which really paid off this weekend and hopefully will pay of at state,” says senior Carley Hand.

All of the team’s stunts and tumbling acts were landed as planned in their two and a half minute routine.”We work too hard everyday to let any stunts fall or anyone bust tumbling, so i wasn’t surprised that we had a great outcome,” commented sophomore Jillian Adams.

The cheer team will compete at the state cheer competition December 16 in the medium varsity division against 13 teams from across the state of Mississippi. The team hopes to win their 12th State title. Before the team goes to state, the cheer team will be performing at the Lamar County Showcase at Sumrall High School at 6:00 P.M. on Thursday December 7th.
